‘Children of the Otter’ is a composition by  Vladimir Martynov for two musically unique performing groups:a suite for  the Tuvan world music quartet Huun Huur Tu and the Russian chamber music ensemble Opus Posth. directed by Tatyana Grindenko. The work, which also includes vocal parts for mixed choir (performed by Perm Choir Mlada conducted by Olga Vyguzova), is based on archaic Siberian folklore, in which the otter is worshipped as the mother of all people,  singing poetry of the Russian avant-garde poet Velimir Khlebnikov (1885-1922.)

In the summer of 2008, in Moscow, Vladimir Oboronko and Alexander Cheparukhin (both of GreenWave Music), approached a renowned Russian composer Vladimir Martynovwith idea of creating a 70 minute long composition that would blend ancient instrumental and throat-singing sound of Tuvan ensemble Huun Huur Tu with a sound of contemporary chamber orchestra. Without hesitation, Mr. Martynov, who had already been familiar with Huun Huur Tu and their music, agreed to participate in the project.

By late summer of 2009 the composition had been mostly ready. It came out combining music from Huun Huur Tu repertoire with original music written by Mr. Martynov specially for the project; the composer also decided to introduce academic choir singing the poetry of the famous Russian avant-garde poet Velimir Khlebnikov (1885-1922). The project was named “Children of the Otter” after the eponymous poem by Khlebnikov

The timing for the completion of the project was perfect because earlier in the summer of 2009 Mr. Cheparukhin, well-known music promoter in Moscow, had been invited to participate in the cultural initiative of the city of Perm’. A provincial city, although “strategically” located nearby Urals Mountains separating subcontinents of Europe and Asia, Perm’ had decided to become a cultural capital of Russia. So far, Russia had two cultural capitals: Moscow and St. Petersburg – Perm’ decided to become a third capital.

Invited by the city and region’s authorities to join the cultural initiative and develop and supervise musical events in Perm’, Mr. Cheparukhin decided that “Children of the Otter”, combining ancient Asian music with contemporary European composing and performing practices, would be a perfect composition to be produced and premiered in Perm’.

By early September 2009, Vladimir Martynov (Moscow), Huun Huur Tu (Kyzyl, Tuva), chamber orchestra Opus Posth (Moscow), singer Mikhail Stepanitch (Moscow) , choir Mlada (Perm’) gathered in Perm’. After several weeks of rehearsals, “Children of the Otter” was premiered in Perm’ on September 17, 2009.

The production and premiere of “Children of the Otter” was made possible through a generous support by Perm’ regional Ministry of Culture, Perm’ Philharmonia, and Perm’ Governor office.

The work, which also includes vocal parts for mixed choir (performed by Perm Choir Mlada conducted by Olga Vyguzova), is based on archaic Siberian folklore, in which the otter is worshipped as the mother of all people. ‘Children of the Otter’ seamlessly blends ancient Tuvan sounds with Vladimir Martynov’s original score. In the composer’s words, the work “aims to provide listeners with a path to immersing themselves in the ever-existing stream of Music.

Perhaps, it might be compared only with ‘Kundun’ by Glass and ‘OVO’ by Gabriel … But the ‘Otter’ is stronger and shriller”

Bios

Huun Huur Tu is a world-known ensemble of ethnic music and throat singing. Being the leader of “Tuvan Folklore Renaissance”, Huun Huur Tu does not limit itself with demonstrating various throat-singing styles, but creatively interprets and develops traditiosinging styles, but creatively interprets and develops traditional music of Tuvan heritage while performing around the globe successfully touring since the 1980ies the group has released several best selling CDs around the world.

Kaigal-ool Khovalyg                        Vocals (Khöömei, Sygyt, Kargyraa), Igyl

An extremely talented, self-taught overtone singer, Khovalyg worked as a shepherd until the age of 21, when he was invited to join the Tuvan State Ensemble. He settled in Kyzyl and started teaching throat singing and igil. A co-founder of Huun-Huur-Tu, he left the State Ensemble in 1993 to devote his attention to the newly formed quartet. He has performed and recorded as a soloist with Vershki da Koreshki, the World Groove Band and the Volkov Trio. Covering a range from tenor to bass, Khovalyg is particularly known for his unique rendition of the khöömei and kargyraa singing styles.

Radik Tyulyush    Vocals (Barbang-Nadyr), Byzaanchi, Khomuz (jew’s harp)

Born in rural Tuva, he was a shepherd before becoming a professional musician. Having perfected his virtuoso throat-singing abilities as a former Soviet-style concert performer of Tuvan folk music, he excels in the borbangnadyr style. He joined Huun-Huur-Tu in 2006 , he performs as well as soloist and did a Britsh tour in spring 2007 with his own program

Sayan Bapa    Vocals (Kargyraa & Khöömei), Toschpulur, Guitar, Igyl

Sayan Bapa, child of a Tuvan father and Russian mother, grew up in the industrial town Ak-Dovurak. He received his musical training in Kislovodsk, Northern Caucasus, where he played fretless bass in a Russian jazz-rock band for several years. In the early 1990s he returned to Tuva to study his roots, and became a member of a folk-rock band, performing traditional Tuvan music on electric instruments. A co-founder of Huun-Huur-Tu, Bapa is a versatile string instrumentalist, and performs on the igil, doshpuluur, and acoustic guitar. As a vocalist he is currently specializing in the kargyraa style.

Alexei Saryglar         Vocals (Sygyt), Tuyug (horse hooves), Tungur (shaman-drum), Igyl

Alexei Saryglar, the youngest member of Huun-Huur-Tu, joined the ensemble in 1995 to replace Alexander Bapa. He completed his musical training in Ulan Ude as a percussionist for classical and popular music, and became a member of the large Russian state ensemble ‘Siberian Souvenir’. A multi-talented performer, Saryglar makes his mark as a sygyt singer, and his expertise with traditional Tuvan percussion and string instruments naturally extends into the art of piano playing. Like the other members of the ensemble, he resides in Kyzyl when not on tour.

Vladimir Martynov is a renowned Russian composer, philosopher, writer, ethnomusicologist, historian and theoretician of music. Known for his work in the Concerto, Orchestral Music, Chamber Music and Choral Music genres, Martynov has experimented with rock and electronica, worked with avant-garde, minimalism, and “New Simplicity” music. His work has been performed around the world

Tatyana Grindenko is a celebrated Russian musician, violinist, winner of numerous domestic and international competitions (including Tchaikovsky Competition). Her performing experience spans through rock, electronica, all periods of European “classical” music. She has collaborated with famous musicians and collectives, and directors both in Russia and abroad.

The chamber orchestra Opus Posth was formed by Tatyana Grindenko in 1999. The orchestra’s choice of repertoire and performance style has been influenced by Vladimir Martynov’s ideas on postmodern composing: it guides a listener to enter into the everflowing Stream of Music rather than creates highly individualistic musical fountains as classical composing used to do.

Michail Stepanitch was trained as a classical pianist, later became interested in singing; sang in Moscow Armenian Choir, then with a famous ensemble of early Russian music Sirin ; has participated in recordings of Vladimir Martynov’s work.

Choir Mlada is one of the most well-known collectives in the city of Perm’, laureate of many competitions in Russia and abroad. Over sixteen years of its existence, the collective has toured extensively in Russia and in Europe.

Diese DVD Live In Munich ist der erste Teil einer zweiteiligen Anthologie und wurde im Rahmen des Jazz Lines Festival 2002 im Theater im Haus der Kunst in München aufgenommen.

Bayern-alpha strahlte das Konzert aus dem Jahre 2002 aus. Wir erhielten riesige Resonanz auf diesen Mitschnitt und veröffentlich die erste DVD von Huun-Huur-Tu. Sie ist der erste Teil einer zwei teiligen Anthologie, der 2. Teil ist für Weihnachten 2007 geplant.

Das Konzert wurde 2002 im Rahmen des Jazz Lines Festival im Theater im Haus der Kunst in München aufgenommen. Huun-Huur-Tu sind zwar nur zu viert, aber mit Unter- und Ober-Tönen erzeugen sie einen ganzen Kosmos voller mythischer Töne. Traditionelle Gesangstechniken ihrer zentralasiatischen Heimat machen es möglich.

Huun-Huur-Tu stammen aus Tuwa, einer abgeschiedenen Republik zwischen Süd-Sibirien und der chinesischen Mongolei. Nur Himmel, Wind und Wasser haben dort über Jahrtausende die Landschaft geprägt – und die Musik. Huun-Huur-Tu ist tuwinisch und bedeutet soviel wie Sonnen-Propeller: Ein Bild für die Licht-Strahlen, die der Zentralkörper unseres Planetensystems bei Sonnenauf- und Untergang aussendet. Die vier Musiker verstehen die Licht-Brechungen, die die Strahlen erzeugen, als Analogie zur Brechung der Klänge, wie sie beim Kehlkopf- und Obertongesang entsteht.

Tuvinischer Obertongesang ist eine der faszinierendsten Vokaltechniken weltweit. Meisterhaft beherrschen HUUN-HUUR-TU diesen Gesangsstil, bei dem ein einziger Sänger bis zu drei Melodien gleichzeitig erklingen lassen kann. Wer selbst noch nicht auf einem Konzert von HUUN-HUUR-TU war, wird wohl nur schwer glauben können, dass es sich hier um Live- Aufnahmen ohne technische Tricks und beigemischte Studioeffekte handelt. Das Quartett aus Tuva, einer kleinen, autonomen Republik nördlich der Mongolei, beherrscht Gesangstechniken, die hierzulande kaum jemand für möglich hält. Die Sänger erzeugen raue, gepresste Kehlkopflaute und darüber schwingende Obertonmelodien. Neben normal gesungenen Melodien ergibt sich daraus ein faszinierender und komplexer Chorsound, der von Gitarre, Trommeln und Pferdekopfgeige begleitet wird. Keinen Augenblick kann man sich deren rituellen Prägungen entziehen. Die Rhythmen sind kraftvoll, die Instrumentalstimmen faszinierend und die Vokaltechnik hypnotisch. Das lange erwartete neue Studio Album der weltbesten Obertonsänger aus Tuva! Sie gelten als die weltbesten Obertonsänger, touren seit 15 Jahren um den Globus, bestreiten jedes Jahr 150 bis 180 Konzerte von Taiwan bis Los Angeles. THE BULGARIAN VOICES ANGELITE & MOSKOW ART TRIO with HUUN-HUUR-TU

The CD marks the second collaboration of Angelite with Huun-Huur-Tu and Mikhail Alperin. The latter’s arrangements leads listeners on a journey of discovery through similarities and differences of Russian, Bulgarian and Tuvan folklore, culminating in the fusion presented on this CD.

Kaum verwunderlich, wenn HUUN-HUUR-TU mit Spirits from Tuva plötzlich sogar zu Stars der elektronischen Musik und gefragten Ideenlieferanten für die internationale DJ-Szene avancieren. Denn die betörend meditativen Gesänge, denen die vier Musiker mit traditionellen Hirten-Instrumenten klare rhythmische Strukturen entgegen setzen, bieten sich der samplefreudigen Remix-Kultur und ihren repititiven Soundschleifen geradezu an. So stürmten HUUN-HUUR-TU im März 2002 erstmals nicht Ethno- und Worldmusic-Hitlisten sondern mit einem Remix ihres Titels “Eki Attar” sogar die Popcharts eines europäischen Landes. Der ursprünglich für einen Werbespot des griechischen Fernsehens im Original verwendete und wegen riesiger Nachfrage später remixte Track des Produzenten George Bitsikas machte HUUN-HUUR-TU schlagartig zu Newcomer-Stars in den Athener Clubs und hielt sich ab Mitte Mai 2002 über Wochen auf Platz eins der griechischen Top Ten.

Sie sind zutiefst geheimnisvoll: die traditionellen, rituellen Kehlkopfgesänge aus dem zentralasiatischen Land Tuva. Denn mit ihrer einmaligen Gesangstechnik entfalten die Sänger aus der Steppe einen fesselnden, Unter- und Obertonreichen Klang-Kosmos. Längst kein Geheimnis mehr ist dagegen der weltweite Erfolg des tuvinischen Quartetts HUUN-HUUR-TU, das mit seiner modernen Präsentation des traditionellen Kehlkopfgesangs eine feste Größe der internationalen Weltmusik geworden ist.

Der Erfolg von “Eki Attar“, das auf Spirits from Tuva in der Radio-Bearbeitung auch als Opener zu hören ist, dürfte Anlass genug für dieses aussergewöhnliche Remix-Album sein. Elf Stücke haben DJ’s, Musiker und Produzenten-Teams aus Griechenland, Deutschland, Frankreich und Russland für SPIRITS OF TUVA beigesteuert, das auch eine Originalversion der tuvinischen Formation (Track 12: “AA-Shuu dekei-OO”) enthält. Die Remixes unterschiedlichster Künstler verleihen dem Album nicht nur eine große stilistische Bandbreite. Sie unterstreichen letztlich auch eindrucksvoll, dass die Bearbeitung dieser faszinierenden Gesänge grossen Raum für persönliche Interpretation – selbst in den unter- schiedlichsten Genres – lässt.

Die entstandene musikalische Spannbreite ist insgesamt so aufregend, wie sie im jeweiligen Stück einleuchtend ist. So hüllt sich die Neubearbeitung (“Descarga”) der DJ’s GOLDENBERG & SCHMUYLE vom Pariser Kultsender ‘Radio Nova’ in ein lockeres Samba-Gewand und mausert sich per Fender Rhodes Piano zum lässigen Latinjazz-Groove. Für überaus ruhige Klänge sorgt der Entspannungs- und Meditations-Musiker YOMANO, der einigen in Deutschland unter dem Namen Volker Kahrs als früherer Grobschnitt-Keyboarder bekannt sein dürfte und unter dessen Feder sich der Titel “Barlyk” zur spärischen Ballade “River of home” entwickelte. Im Studio des deutschen Sitar-Spielers und Ethno-Trance-Musikers HARRY PAYUTA verwandelte sich das HUUN HUUR TU-Stück “Legend” in den “Legend World Sitar Mix” – eine hypnotisierende Ambient-Nummer, die sich überaus fließend und harmonisch zwischen folkloristischen Einflüssen Asiens, Afrikas und des Balkan bewegt. Die international erfolgreichen, deutschen DJ’s SUGAR CAINE und EMJAY steuerten mit ihren Bearbeitungen von “Borganngadyr” (“Spring Song”) und “Exile Song” (“Far away from home”) jeweils einen lupenreinen Techno- bzw. House-Track bei. Letzterer Titel ist zudem in einer Version des deutschen Produzententeams DA LOOP enthalten, deren Remixes von “Exile Song” (“Far away from home”) und “Kargyra” (“Mountain Voice”) sich mit ihren flächigen Synthie-Streicher- klängen und minimalistischen Rhythmusmustern vor allem der Stil-Elemente der elektronischen Trance- und Ambient-Music bedienen.

HUUN-HUUR-TU, die der Remix-Kultur und der Verknüpfung von Popmusik mit musikalischen Traditionen übrigens sehr offen gegenüber stehen, haben es sich nicht nehmen lassen, neben ihren Aufnahmen auch tatkräftige Unterstützung anzubieten. So flogen die Sänger sogar nach Moskau, um in einer Session mit der russischen Formation MALERIJA die Titel “Chedy-Khaan” (Original: “AA-Shuu dekei-OO”) und “Love Ride” (“Oraila Boidula”) neu einzuspielen, die nun deutlich die Handschrift der populären Rock- und Pop-Band erkennen lassen.

Terra incognita tuva    A journey to nomads, musicians and shamans Mysterious stories of travellers from the inner Asia – then and now. “It would have to be a very dull patron, who would not soon begin to be tormented in Tuva by the question what this country might have been once, what peoples lived in it.” (Otto Mänchen-Helfen 1929) The relationship of the Tuvinians to their homeland shows this characteristic expression: Mother Earth Tuva, while in the rest of the world the homeland is called Father Earth. This intimate relationship with their homeland is encountered at every turn in the country and this is necessary to understand if one wants to understand Tuva. The Tuvinian experiences nature as an intelligent and wise environment with an independent will. This book tells about shamans, musicians, writers, wrestlers and horses as well as nomadism and follows the history of the Tyulyush family over four generations.

Past & Present is a book series. After Lisbon and the historical book about New York, the book about Tuva, the mysterious republic on the border to Mongolia, is the third book of photographs with an unusual perspective.

These books are always connected with music from the respective regions. In the present volume, the connection to music is even greater, as the family history of one of the musicians of the Huun Huur Tu ensemble is also told here and then their music is heard.

We know little about the Russian Republic, located in the very south of the country on the border with Mongolia.

In 1927 Otto Mänchen-Helfen was one of the first Western Europeans to travel to Tuva and wrote a book: “Journey to Asian Tuva”.  At that time it was more than difficult to travel there: “I went to a thousand places and offices, received certificates, stamps, signatures, confirmations, filled in the hundred sections of the questionnaires such as In 2019, as an author, I travelled without any problems via Moscow and Abakan in his footsteps to Tuva to deepen my knowledge, which comes from 22 years of collaboration with the music ensemble Huun Huur Tu.

The Western-centered view, shaped by the war events of the Second World War, is described in a report from the German magazine Spiegel (1948).  It speaks of dirty, uncivilised people from Inner Asia. A country that was only briefly an independent state until it disappeared again from the international map: Tanna – Tuwa.  Her famous triangular stamps bear witness to her national pride. In the 1940s the equestrian nomads fought with the Russian army against the Nazis and today the inhabitants are happy to be a part of Russia. The area between Gobi, Sayan Mountains and Altai was home to high and independent cultures in ancient times. Little of this treasure is known and excavated. Only the gold treasure of the Scyptics was discovered not too long ago, an archaeological sensation from one of the advanced civilizations of Central Asia (from the 8th – 1st century B.C.). In our world view, there were only the wild nomads on horseback, hired by Tschingis Khan, who rode to the gates of Central Europe with a firebomb. The Tuvinians were considered their bravest warriors, but Tuva is so much more and we know so little about it.

Situated on the border with Mongolia, one of the largest rivers in Asia, the Yenissei (the fourth largest river on earth) flows through it for more than 4000 KM. Seven hours flight time and four time zones away from Moscow, the country is now developing into a place of longing for people from all over the world. The most famous ambassadors are the above-mentioned musicians from the centre of Asia, who have been travelling the world for more than 30 years and communicating the culture of their country. I follow them to their home country and with the capital Kysyl. Nowadays we meet many foreigners there.  They are mainly interested in shamanism and visit the shaman clinic there.  The simple, nature-related nomadic life in the steppes of Asia has shaped this people. Today, however, as a matter of course, the jeep stands in front of the yurt and the satellite dish and solar panel are installed on the roof. National sports like horseback riding and wrestling are very popular and the best of their profession are celebrated as national heroes. Wrestling matches are held in front of several 1000 spectators in the stadium. Meanwhile the best overtone singers of the country meet once a year in the capital for a competition. I followed the sounds and visited the festival.

A journey of pictures with exciting stories and retrospective views should bring the “Terra Incognita – Tuva” a little closer to our world and give insights into a culture so foreign to us.
